The TikTok video size that TikTok's own guidance points to is vertical 9:16 at 720p or higher. It does not name an exact pixel size for a regular post, and the 1080 × 1920 that guides quote is not a figure we found on TikTok's pages. This page lists every official size and limit with its source and says whether it applies to ads, TikTok Studio on desktop, or developers.
TikTok video size: the short answer
Shoot and export vertical video at 9:16, at 720p or higher. That is what TikTok itself recommends: its ad creative guidance lists "orienting vertically at 9:16" and "shooting at least 720P resolution" as the basics. The Creator Academy also gives 720p or higher for TikTok Studio desktop uploads.
TikTok does not publish an exact pixel size for a regular post. If you want a specific number, a 9:16 frame that is 1080 pixels wide is 1080 × 1920. That is our arithmetic, not a TikTok figure. The lowest vertical size TikTok publishes, for ads, is 540 × 960 pixels.
TikTok video size at a glance
Each figure depends on where the video is used, so the table says which kind it is.
| What | Figure | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Vertical, 9:16 | Recommended in TikTok's ad creative guidance |
| Resolution | At least 720p | Ad creative guidance; also TikTok Studio on desktop |
| Vertical video size | 9:16, at least 540 × 960 pixels | In-feed ads |
| Square video size | 1:1, at least 640 × 640 pixels | In-feed ads |
| Horizontal video size | 16:9, at least 960 × 540 pixels | In-feed ads |
| Length and file size | Up to 60 minutes and 10 GB | Uploads in TikTok Studio on desktop |
| Frame size | 360 to 4096 pixels per side | Videos sent through TikTok's developer API |
The diagram above shows the three ad shapes at the same scale, using their minimum sizes.
TikTok video size ratio
The only official page we found that lists ratios is TikTok's specification for in-feed ads. For standard ads that are not Spark Ads, vertical 9:16 is marked as recommended, at 540 × 960 pixels or more. Horizontal 16:9 is accepted at 960 × 540 or more, and square 1:1 at 640 × 640 or more.
A 2022 post on TikTok's business blog points the same way for brand video: avoid anything outside the full 9:16 portrait ratio, because TikTok is a full-screen experience. Neither source sets a limit on regular posts, and horizontal video can be posted too, as the next section shows.
Landscape video and full screen mode
TikTok's Creator Academy says the app is not only for vertical video. Horizontal videos show a Full screen button, which lets viewers watch them in landscape. For the button to appear, the video must be true landscape, with no text in the margins. TikTok gives no ratio or pixel size for landscape video.
Resolution
TikTok names 720p as the floor in two places. The ad creative guidance says to shoot at least 720P. The Creator Academy article on getting started says that on TikTok Studio desktop you can upload videos up to 60 minutes long in 720p resolution or higher, landscape or vertical.
Above that floor, TikTok gives no recommended or maximum resolution for regular posts. A 1080 × 1920 export is 9:16 and above the 720p floor, so it fits what TikTok publishes, but nothing requires it.
Length and file size
The same Creator Academy article gives 60 minutes and 10 GB for TikTok Studio on desktop. When you upload from a web browser, TikTok uploads the whole video, and its help page says to use the app if you want to shorten it. We did not find a maximum length or file size for uploads from the mobile app.
Numbers other guides quote that TikTok does not publish
The five top-ranking guides we read give 1080 × 1920 as the TikTok size. Most add separate file-size caps for iPhone and Android, and they give a maximum length of 3, 10 or 60 minutes for videos recorded in the app. They disagree with each other. TikTok's help, Creator Academy, ads and developer pages list no 1080 × 1920 size, no phone-specific file cap and no in-app length limit. The 60 minutes on TikTok's pages is for TikTok Studio on desktop, and the 3, 5 and 10 minutes are for its developer API. This guide leaves the unsourced numbers out.
TikTok ad sizes
The ad sizes in the table come from TikTok's page for in-feed auction ads. For non-Spark ads it also lists MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP and AVI files, up to 10 minutes and 500 MB. Spark Ads, which promote an existing post, are listed with MP4 or MOV, no duration limit and no dimensions.
Photo posts
TikTok's help page for making a post says you can add up to 35 photos to a photo post. It does not list a pixel size or aspect ratio for photos.
Limits for developers
If you post through TikTok's Content Posting API instead of the app, TikTok's media transfer guide lists its own limits. These apply to that API only.
- Video formats: MP4 (recommended), WebM and MOV, with H.264 recommended
- Frame rate: 23 to 60 FPS
- Frame size: 360 to 4096 pixels for both height and width
- File size: up to 4 GB
- Length: all creators can post 3-minute videos, and some accounts can post 5 or 10 minutes
- Photos: WebP or JPEG, up to 20 MB each
What TikTok does not publish
We searched TikTok's help, Creator Academy, ads and developer pages for these and found nothing, so this guide does not state them: a required pixel size for regular video posts, a pixel size for covers, a maximum length or file size for app uploads, and a size in inches.
Choosing a size
Match the shape to how people will watch. For a phone feed, use vertical 9:16 at 720p or higher. For a longer horizontal video, true landscape without text in the margins gets the Full screen button. If you post the same video on Instagram, see the Instagram Reel size guide. If your footage is the wrong shape, see how to change a video's aspect ratio. If you spot a typo after posting, see what TikTok documents about how to edit a TikTok caption. More platforms are in the social media size guides.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for a TikTok video?
Vertical 9:16 at 720p or higher, which is what TikTok's ad creative guidance recommends. TikTok does not name an exact pixel size for regular posts. A 9:16 frame 1080 pixels wide is 1080 × 1920, but that is arithmetic, not a TikTok rule.
Is 1080 × 1920 the official TikTok size?
No. We did not find 1080 × 1920 on any TikTok help, Creator Academy, ads or developer page. It is what a 9:16 frame measures at 1080 pixels wide. The lowest vertical size TikTok publishes is 540 × 960, for ads.
What is the TikTok video size ratio?
TikTok recommends vertical 9:16. For in-feed ads it lists 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9. It gives no ratio rule for regular posts.
Can I post a landscape video on TikTok?
Yes. TikTok says horizontal videos show a Full screen button, provided the video is true landscape with no text in the margins.
How long can a TikTok video be?
TikTok's Creator Academy says TikTok Studio on desktop accepts videos up to 60 minutes. For the mobile app we did not find a published maximum.
What is the maximum TikTok video file size?
The Creator Academy gives up to 10 GB for uploads in TikTok Studio on desktop. TikTok's developer API has a separate limit of 4 GB. TikTok lists no official limit for app uploads.

For in-feed ads that are not Spark Ads, TikTok lists vertical 9:16 at 540 × 960 pixels or more as recommended, horizontal 16:9 at 960 × 540 or more, and square 1:1 at 640 × 640 or more.
How many photos can a TikTok photo post have?
TikTok's help page says you can add up to 35 photos.
