How to Edit a TikTok Caption, Before and After Posting

Before you post, the caption is the description field on the post screen. After you post, TikTok's Help Center documents editing auto-generated captions and privacy, but no step for changing a video's description. This page shows what is documented, how to check your own app, and what the guides claim without a source.

Before you post, you edit the caption on the post screen: tap Next, then change the description field. After you post, it depends on what you mean by caption. TikTok's Help Center documents a way to edit auto-generated captions (the subtitles on the video) on a posted video. It does not document any step for changing the description text under a posted video, even though many guides say you can. Open the video, tap More options, and see whether your app shows Edit post.

Can you edit a TikTok caption after posting?

It depends on which caption. TikTok's own pages cover some changes to a published post and are silent on others. This table sticks to what they say.

What you want to changeAfter posting?Where TikTok documents it
Subtitles (auto-generated captions)YesTap the caption on your video, then Edit captions
Who can view the postYesMore options, then Privacy settings
Alt text on a photo postYesMore options, then Edit post
Mentioning a creator you forgot to creditVia a commentComments, then the Mention button
Description text and hashtags on a videoNot documentedCheck More options for Edit post
Cover (thumbnail)Not documentedDocumented only before posting
Text you added with the Text toolNot documentedDocumented only on the editing screen

"Not documented" does not mean "impossible". It means the Help Center pages read on October 19, 2026 do not describe it, so this page will not tell you it works.

Check whether your app has Edit post

TikTok's Help Center does name an Edit post menu item for posted photos, in its steps for adding alt text: open the post, tap the More options button on the side, then tap Edit post at the bottom. Whether the same menu lets you change the description of a video is not documented, so look at your own screen:

  1. In the TikTok app, open your video from your profile.
  2. Tap the More options (three dots) button on the side.
  3. Look for Edit post. If it is there, see which fields it lets you change.

CapCut's guide and Vizard's guide say Edit post changes the description and hashtags for 7 days after posting, and CapCut adds that you can do it only once every 24 hours. Neither cites a TikTok page, and TikTok's pages state neither limit, so treat both as unconfirmed. Shopify's guide says you cannot edit a caption after posting at all. Since the guides disagree, trust what your own menu offers.

If there is no Edit post option

You have three choices:

  • Leave it. For a small typo, the post is still live with its comments and likes.
  • Add what you forgot in a comment. TikTok suggests this to credit a creator after posting: tap Comments on your video, tap the Mention button in the comment bar, then tap Post.
  • Delete and post again. Tap More options on the video, then Delete. TikTok keeps a deleted post in its system for up to 30 days. If you change your mind, go to Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Activity center, Recently deleted, tap the post, and tap Restore. A restored post comes back with its comments and likes. Posting the video again makes a new post, separate from the old one and its comments and likes.

Edit the caption before you post

On the post screen, TikTok lists what you can set before publishing a video: description, hashtags, tag people, location, a link and privacy settings. The steps:

  1. Tap the Add post (+) button, then record or upload your video.
  2. Add your effects, sound and text, then tap Next.
  3. Write or change the description, hashtags, tags and privacy settings.
  4. Tap Post. If you are not ready, tap Drafts: the post is saved on your profile and visible only to you.

The cover is chosen on this screen too: tap Select cover on the video thumbnail, drag the frame to the moment you want, and tap Save. If you add on-screen text, the free safe zone checker overlays TikTok's interface areas on your image so you can see where text sits, and the TikTok video size guide has the dimensions.

Description, subtitles and on-screen text are different things

Searches for "TikTok captions" mix these up, and TikTok's tools differ for each:

  • The description is the text you write in the Add description field on the post screen. Most people mean this when they say caption.
  • Auto-generated captions are subtitles made by speech recognition. TikTok says captions are generated automatically for videos you upload. To choose their language, tap More options on the post screen, then Select video language. To fix a mistake later, use Edit captions as in the table above.
  • Creator captions are subtitles you turn on with the Captions button on the editing screen. TikTok transcribes the speech, and you preview, edit each line and tap Save.
  • On-screen text is anything you add with the Text button on the editing screen. It is part of the video, so change it before you post.

Sources

Everything above comes from TikTok's Help Center, read on October 19, 2026:

The 7-day and once-a-day claims are from CapCut's and Vizard's guides, and the "you cannot edit" claim is from Shopify's guide, all linked above. TikTok changes its menus by app version, region and account, so your screen may differ.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you edit a TikTok caption after posting?

For the subtitles on a video, yes: tap the caption, then Edit captions. For the description under a video, TikTok's Help Center documents no step, and guides disagree. Open More options on your video and see whether Edit post appears.

How long after posting can you edit a TikTok caption?

TikTok's Help Center does not publish a time limit. Some guides say 7 days, with one edit per day, but they give no TikTok source.

Does changing a post's privacy reset its views?

No. TikTok states that the view count reflects all views to date and does not reset when you update the privacy settings. It does not say what editing a description does to views.

How do I fix a typo in auto-generated captions on a posted video?

Go to your video, tap the caption on the video, tap Edit captions, change or remove the lines, and tap Save at the top.
